Skinny Rebel – London’s Most Extreme HIIT Class relaunches at Leman LockeDate: 03 Mar 2019
HIIT classes are tough, that’s pretty much accepted fact. But Skinny Rebel’s altitude training workouts are a whole new ballgame.
Designed by the fitness professionals over at Train Dirty London - dubbed ‘London’s leading personal training company’ - these high-intensity training sessions promise to get your pulse on fire and body dripping with sweat. The workout features all the full-body conditioning elements that any good PT class should - with body weight resistance, free weight and plyometric exercises. The USP, though? The classes involve working out with an altitude mask covering your face. Yes, it might look a little apocalyse-esque – but it’s all for a good, scientific purpose.
Benefits of Altitude Training
High-altitude training masks are a respiratory training tool, first used by professional athletes to enhance the body’s ability to utilize oxygen and strengthen respiratory muscles, by simulating altitude training. In technical terms, this is known as Intermittent hypoxic training (IHT). Covering the mouth and nose, the masks regulate the amount of air that can be inhaled, forcing you to take longer, deeper breaths and work your muscles with less oxygen intake. There are numerous scientific benefits – including increased aerobic capacity and endurance performance, improved blood flow, and mental focus.
If breathing gets too hard, the instructor will encourage you to take the mask off. The cool, unrestricted air is very refreshing during rest breaks. For seasoned Skinny Rebel-goers who are more comfortable with the mask, there are three gauges, allowing air flow to be decreased further to increase the difficulty of the workout.
