Heading to Zurich and fancy exploring the surrounding area? Swiss photographer Mathilde Rietsch shows us three spots for stretching your legs and breathtaking views around Zurich.

Explore the picturesque landscapes of Zurich’s surrounding mountains, lakes, and forests with the help of Swiss photographer Mathilde Rietsch. Mathilde showcases some spots in and around Zurich where you can stretch your legs, immerse yourself in nature, and take a refreshing dip in the pristine lakes of the region.

With crystal-clear lakes, panoramic views of surrounding nature and mountains, these trails offer an ideal escape from the city. Enjoy scenic walks, take a refreshing dip in pristine lakes, and soak in breathtaking vistas.

Klöntalersee.

Klöntalersee is a stunning lake located in the canton of Glarus, known for its breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. It’s a popular destination for hiking, picnicking, and swimming. The road leading to the lake offers a scenic drive with several spots to stop and take in the views. Perfect for a day trip, the area features well-marked trails and plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature. Our itinerary included walking from Klöntalerstrasse to Oberstefelproviding incredibly beautiful views of the area's natural beauty.

Rigi Kulm.

Rigi Kulm is a popular peak in Central Switzerland, accessible by cogwheel train from Vitznau or Arth-Goldau. It offers panoramic views of the Swiss Alps, Lake Lucerne, and the surrounding area. Ideal for hiking, the peak has trails suitable for all levels. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments and stunning views at the Rigi Kulm Hotel at the summit. For our trip, we took the train from Zurich to Vitznau and then the cogwheel train up to Rigi Kulm. After exploring, we returned to Vitznau to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Käferberg.

Enjoy a myriad of meandering walks only a short ride from Zurich’s city centre. Käferberg is a small, wooded mountain offering amazing views across Limmat Valley. Make sure to check out the different vantage points where you’ll be able to view both Zurich and the snowcapped Alps if the weather is on your side.

Loorenkopf.

Only 25 minutes from Zurich HBF, Loorenkopf is a circular trail leading through a ravine to an observation tower where you’ll get views across Zurich. Most of the walk is through dense forest but is an easy walk for all ages and can also be accessed via public transport.

Uetliberg.

A short train ride from Zurich, you’ll find a panoramic viewpoint over the city of Zurich and mountains looming above the houses and Lake Zurich. Uetliberg is a low elevation hill with playgrounds, picnic parks and viewpoints for both friends and family to enjoy.

Locke am Platz, Enge.
